Thinking About Learning to Sew? Let Me Help You Start With Confidence

If you’ve ever looked at a sewing machine and thought “I’d love to learn, but I don’t know where to begin”, I promise you’re not alone.

Almost everyone who walks into my studio says the same thing:

“I’ve always wanted to learn… I just didn’t know where to start.”

That’s exactly why my Complete Beginner Sewing Workshop exists, and why I always recommend it as the first step, no matter what you eventually want to make.

Why I Always Recommend the Complete Beginner Workshop First

This workshop is designed for absolute beginners. You don’t need any experience, and you definitely don’t need to feel confident when you arrive – that’s my job 😊

During the session, I’ll guide you through:

  • Getting to know a sewing machine (in a calm, no-pressure way)
  • Understanding how sewing actually works (without jargon)
  • Practising the key skills you’ll use again and again
  • Making your first simple project so you leave feeling proud, not overwhelmed

By the end, most people say they’re surprised by how achievable sewing suddenly feels.

And honestly? Starting with the basics makes everything else so much more enjoyable later.

Where Can You Go After the Beginner Workshop?

Once you’ve completed the beginner session, you can choose the direction that suits you best.

Home Furnishings – Cushions & Curtains (February)

If you love the idea of making things for your home, I have Cushion Making (5/2)and Curtain Making workshops (19/2) coming up in February.

These are brilliant next steps because they:

  • Build directly on what you learn as a beginner
  • Teach you neat, professional finishes
  • You will know how to insert zips and piping
  • Result in something practical you can use straight away

There’s nothing quite like looking at a cushion or curtains you’ve made yourself and thinking “I did that.”

Dressmaking – More Dates Coming Soon

If clothes are more your thing, I’ll be adding new dressmaking dates very soon. My Beginners Trouser Making workshop is already fully booked, which shows just how many people are keen to start making their own clothes – and that all began with learning the basics first.

** I’d love your input – if there’s something you’re especially keen to make (skirts, dresses, tops, pyjamas, or something else), please let me know. Your feedback really helps me plan future workshops that people genuinely want.

As soon as new dressmaking workshops are released, beginner sewists will be the first ready to jump in confidently.

A Little Reassurance Before You Book

Because it’s just me running Sewansome, you won’t be lost in a crowd or rushed through a class. I keep workshops friendly, supportive and relaxed – and I genuinely love seeing people surprise themselves with what they can do.
