Have you got a pair of old jeans or other trousers sitting in your wardrobe that you never wear anymore? Bring them along and give them a new lease of life! In this fun and practical beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn how to upcycle old trousers into your very own reusable tote bag. You’ll learn how to make the most of the fabric you already have, create your own simple tote bag pattern, and turn unwanted clothing into something useful and unique.
What you’ll learn
During the workshop, you’ll be guided through the process from start to finish, including:
- How to choose and prepare suitable old jeans or trousers for upcycling
- How to make your own simple tote bag pattern
- How to cut your fabric and make the most of the existing seams and features
- Sewing techniques for constructing your tote bag
- How to add a practical patch pocket
- Option to learn how to add a zipped pocket, depending on time and your confidence
- Tips and ideas for upcycling other unwanted clothes and fabrics
- You’ll leave with your own handmade upcycled tote bag and new sewing skills that you can use on future projects.
What to bring
Please bring one or two pairs of old jeans or trousers that you no longer wear. Denim is particularly suitable, but other sturdy trousers can work well too.
You’ll also need:
- Your sewing machine including a zipper foot
- Sewing thread
- A zip if you’d like to make a zipped pocket
Don’t worry if you don’t have everything! Extra haberdashery, including zips and thread, can be purchased during the workshop if needed.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at beginners and anyone who would like to learn more about sewing and clothing upcycling. You don’t need to be an expert sewist. Just bring along some old clothes, a willingness to have a go, and I’ll guide you through the process.
With only 4 spaces available, you’ll get plenty of individual help and support throughout the morning.
