Business move

As you some of you are aware, I am moving business from Mutley to Plympton. The move is taking some time as we need to build little accommodation for the business first and ever changing weather and other duties cause some delays. I plan to be in full motion before 1st of August at the latest but I will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, please email with any requests to but bear in mind I wont be able to take on any ‘need it yesterday’ jobs at the moment.

Anyone wanting sewing lessons, I will do only 1-2-1 only through summer as I have all weekends taken by jobs and my customers should enjoy summer holidays. Workshops will be planned and dates announced in August.

See you soon 🙂

sewing machines

I get often asked what sewing machine would I recommend. Singer heavy duty 4423 is a work horse at reasonable price. I had mine for 5 years now and had it serviced once. It is manual machine, easy to use (not as daunting as electronic machines), you can set lenght and width of all stitches, it has one step button holes, can use free embroidery foot and 2 needles. It has all you need to start sewing. It might not be the sexiest machine but it will serve you well and to my knowledge its the best value for money on the market.

When choosing a sewing machine, think about what you want to use it for (dressmaking, curtains, quilting or embroidery). Also consider how often you will be using it and what you want out of it. Will you use thicker materials or mostly fine? Will you want to use walking foot to create quilts? Will need to make button holes and use free arm?

If you wish to spend more money and want something more robust, I found these models as being suitable. I got pfaff and love it!

A little bit about me:

My name is Magdalena Mrvova and I am originally from Slovakia. I was lucky to be born at a time when practical skills were passed on from mothers to daughters, and I started to learn handcrafts from a very early age. Coming from a creative and engineering background, I am naturally creative and explorative.

I started being self-employed in 2006 when I started photography and offer this service to businesses. You can view this venture here: This knowledge coupled with marketing and design experience was a huge asset when I decided to set up SEWANSOME.

At college, I studied fashion design alongside the history of art, coupled with business management, marketing and languages.

I am now fully qualified in teaching adults but also in curtain making and soft furnishings.

New services for your home

I now offer consultancy for your soft furnishings and measuring service. For a fee of £50 (beyond 20 miles mileage applies on top) I come to your home and spend time with you going through your ideas and options for fabrics, linings and fittings such as curtain rails and other accessories.

I also measure your windows (and I can advise to you windows from companies like Bill’s Blinds Ltd) and existing poles so you know all the finished products will fit perfectly. When offering products to you, I will work with your budget and offer what fits within in and aadvise where this is not possible and help you find another option.
